TRANQUIL features the paintings of Water Poon, a notable Hong Kong artist currently living in Vancouver.
Poon’s simple yet deeply poetic paintings of Guilin in the south of China capture the natural beauty and tranquility of the region. In a meditative act of painting, Poon transcends the self and surrenders to the captivating beauty and stillness of nature. His style is marked by fewness of brushstrokes and simplicity of palette, resulting in unique and modern landscapes using traditional Chinese ink and rice paper. All proceeds from exhibition sales will be donated to Vancouver General Hospital. WATER POON is a scholar, artist, photographer, designer, and film director. Born in China in 1944, Poon started his artistic career as a photojournalist in the early 1980s, documenting areas of China closed to the outside world. Later, he began painting scenes of his homeland and continues to work as an artist between Hong Kong and Vancouver. Poon is celebrated for his delicate watercolour paintings and mixed-media works using ink, watercolour, and acrylic. His works have been exhibited, published, and collected worldwide, including at the Beijing Art Museum and National Dr. Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei. Over the years, Poon has edited, designed, and published over fifty photographic collections, art books and travel journals. His extensive portfolio consists of a variety of projects and awards, including Hong Kong Artist of the Year and Martell Artist of the Year award in Shanghai. |
